You can sharpen dry or with water. Fine grit puts a keen edge on a regularly maintained edge. It is also great for water stone flattening.

This stone works well for the intermediate stage of the sharpening process. You will need a coarse stone if you want to flatten your tool and an extra coarse to tune up most old tools that need major work. You can use it for the final stage also but if you want that final mirror shine the extra fine will work better as a final stage. Extra fine is not an absolute necessity as fine will make your tool very sharp. Also, 2 1/2″ is about the minimum width for sharpening plane irons. I have no idea how durable this stone will be, but for the price it should be durable. It’s heavy and I like the weight.

Bought from one of Amazon suppliers that was cheaper, but sent the wrong product. (Wanted fine, sent coarse). I contacted company and they said I could send them back. Just take to the UPS store approx 20 miles away. Way too much hassle, I gave them away as gifts. Will think twice before ordering something again.
