This worked great even though my joists are 19 inches apart. I used two 2x4s to shim up the distance and its been holding up great.

When I placed the bracket between the ceiling joists I thought I would have to add wood bracing to take up about 1/2″ total space. But when I clamped the bracket to the horizontal beams and drilled the holes, the fit was very tight and secure.
