I was looking for a health and eco-conscious mat. While this mat is free of PVC and latex, it still has a noxious smell which interferes with my yoga practice. It is possible that the smell will off-gas over time, but I’m not keeping it long enough to find out. It is made of TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) which is a blend of plastic and rubber; this makes it better than the cheaper all-synthetic mats which may also contain harmful PVCs, but it’s still not all that “green”. It is a good size: 24″W x 68″L x .18″(4mm) thick. It provides good cushioning but it is only mildly textured and offers poor traction. After using it every day for two weeks, I’m returning it.

I used to take yoga classes at a gym so they never heated the room. When the class would get intense, I found myself needing more traction. This mat worked out great. It’s not the cushiest mat but I didn’t mind because my feet and/or hands weren’t slipping anymore. Well, I just started taking yoga classes at a studio where they turn up the heat in most of their classes. I find myself slipping a lot now. So much during the last class that I’m now having to buy one of those skidless towels (trying out the gaiam one first as it’s the least expensive.)
I overlooked its lack of cushion for its traction and now I have neither. But I’m hoping that w/ the skidless towel, everything will be right in my yoga world again!
